Turquoise & Hot Pink Ombre Chevron Quilt

Posted on May 26, 2016December 14, 2023 by Mathew Boudreaux

This all started when last year, my niece Madi told me that she didn’t have a blanket, so I decided to make her one. At the time, I had never made one, so I took a class at Modern Domestic in Portland hoping that it would jumpstart my quilting like it had done to my apparel. And boy oh boy did it ever.

I knew I wanted to make a HST quilt and asked my quilty Yoda Nydia what size to use and she told me she uses 6.5″ and that there’s a nifty square up tool to get. Yaaaay for sewing goodies!

So I knew that I wanted it to be a gradation from light in the middle to dark on the outside but the chevron thing kinda just happened when I started to tape the squares to the wall, so I ran with it. I was like omg this is so rad, but then when I started to sew them all together the real magic began.

Once I was all done, and I saw the whole thing on my wall, I had an oh crap moment when I realized that I couldn’t quilt a twin sized quilt on my domestic machine.

So naturally I decided to take the long arm class at Modern Domestic to see if I could manage it. Seriously it’s like the most zen power tool I’ve ever played with! And I was totally dreadful the first night, but by the time my practice session came around, I was able to come up with a game plan on how to quilt. Then I  showed up for my “real” quilting time and this happened…

Like I don’t I will how it clicked so fast but like I became one with that machine and it was like we were dancing on top of the quilt. Now I’m kinda sad to part ways with this puppy, but I know that it has an awesome companion in my niece.

You absolutely can quilt a twin-size quilt on a domestic machine! It requires a lot of prep, but it can be done, and beautifully!

Lol, yes. There are about eighty bazillion tutorials online, so you should be able to find some good tips and ideas.

For the record, I rarely machine quilt. I enjoy hand quilting too much…but when I’m facing a deadline and need to get a quilt done NOW, I use the machine. And I think some designs just look better when machine quilted. McTavishing, for instance.

It’s so great! All those shade variations are so cool. You can quilt a twin but it’s a pain in the neck or rather the shoulders. I’d much much rather do it on a long arm
