Mimi G Inspired Dress for Helena

Posted on September 26, 2017February 21, 2021 by Mathew Boudreaux

Most days, I’m too busy to keep up with what’s going on with peeps. It’s not my preference, but merely a product of perpetually having too much on my plate and I am hoping to rectify this in the next couple months (been saying this for a couple years so). I say this because when Mimi messaged me asking if I was in PDX because she was coming to town I was all like heck ya and I totally crashed the class she was teaching at Fabric Depot.

So if you don’t know Mimi G, among being a bomb business woman & creative and having her smize on point, she has really cool patterns with Simplicity. Like every time she comes out with a new pattern, I always think in my head that want to make a Helena-sized version, but I never do it because deadlines and work and life and stuff. So I totally crashed her class with Helena and we were totally on half-extra so Miss Mimi wouldn’t get in trouble (that’s what I told Helena before we went in).  I also got to meet Norris and Deb, who are super cool and rad in their own right.

So the class was on Mimi’s Simplicity 8466 pattern, which is this really cool knit top. On the drive home, my brain started planning how I could convert it to a dress for Helena that would work with her. And when I got home, I ran upstairs to cut into this knit from Pat Bravo‘s new Indie Folk and the new Vermillion Flame color of the Pure Elements solid knit.

What made this doubly fun was that I got a new Brother CV 3440 (AKA Britney) and finally took her out of the box to play. I made a video of her in action and used the Aurifil Ermine 50 wt from my Mister Domestic’s Tool Box, so if you wanna see that click on the image below.

And without further ado, here is the finished dress that Helena couldn’t wait to wear to school today.

I am a flying geese fan, I love it. I found a really cool pattern for flying geese knit socks. I can knit but I cant follow a knitting pattern to save my life so I will have to stick with quilts.
