Big Bang Quilt

Posted on July 25, 2016December 13, 2023 by Mathew Boudreaux

So I had the idea for this quilt for a while, but totally didn’t know how to make it happen until I learned this improv technique with the Luminary Quilt that I made. I’m so inspired by the movement in Ursula Kern‘s work, so with the combination of this inspiration and the new technique I was fired up. Then, enter Me + You fabric sending me the fabrics I needed and the Big Bang Quilt was born.

Admittedly, this was one of those ideas that I didn’t have a clue what tedious time this would take, and, as I found out, it was a lot. So I worked on sections at a time, creating the colors stories and movement for each corner.

I started with the yellow but then realized that I needed to mentally understand the center so then I constructed that.

Next I worked on the other three color stories, which totally made sense now that I could visualize the big picture flow.

Now I know I wanted a hard black line separating the grays and the color areas, which took a little more planning but was so much fun!!!

With all the blocks done, I took a little detour to Cristy’s YouTube tutorial to learn how to spin my seams and oh my did it make a difference.

Then voila, this puppy was pieced and bananas!!!

I sent this one off to Gina Pina in Austin to get quilted and OMG am I flipping out. And like I even decided to hand bind this one. Whaaaaat?!?

This is very cool. I have a quilt in my mind that I don’t know how to construct yet. Seeing that you have done it is cool and makes me think that I don’t want to abandon it. Thanks for sharing. You should be proud! It’s wowza!

Love this! My husband is a space geek and I know he would adore something like this. I definitely with you on underestimating man hours for quilt designs especially as I conveniently “forget” the iron and cutting phase of a project.
