Tumbling Blocks & Denim Messenger Bag

Tumbling Blocks & Denim Messenger Bag

Posted on May 22, 2018April 4, 2024 by Mathew Boudreaux

Always on the pursuit of finding new things to make with fabric weaving, Tara of Wefty Needle has this amazeballs new pattern that is basically the perfect messenger bag. Instead of doing the woven diamonds from the pattern, I did my Tumbling Blocks weave but really any pattern of weaving would make this project amazeballs.

Even though my Loved to Pieces collection is inspired by English Paper Piecing, I specifically designed two of the prints so they would also be amazing to weave with: Striped Flow & Gladiolumns. I used the Laced Infinity print as the third to add a perfect blender to tame the other two prints. I also found another use for my Rita’s Racques.

And then through the magic of weaving, this bombtastic textile was created using the three fabrics that is perfectly suited to become a messenger bag.

Especially for heavy use fabric weaved projects, I’ve discovered that quilting becomes critical, but like I am not interested in having any competition with the beauty of the weave. I’ve found that either stitching in the ditch so there’s zero competition or, as in this case, quilting with a thinner thread 1/8″ to either side of the strip edge creates a beautiful complement. I used 80 wt Dark Turquoise from Aurifil.

For the rest of the bag, I chose the Rainy Night Crosshatch Denim from Art Gallery Fabrics and my Reap & Sew Azul print for the linings.

Quick tip: any time you work with darker denims, make sure to prewash a couple times with a color catcher.

I added an inset zipper that wasn’t in the pattern that I think adds a perfect additional element to this messenger. I have a YouTube video tutorial to show how I did it.

And here is the finished Tumbling Blocks & Denim Messenger Bag that is going to be my definite go-to for business meetings and basically any other reason I can think of.

This is an amazing bag. Now I’ll have to learn to weave so I can make one…
