Next Level Rope Bowls (w Video Tutorial)

Posted on September 6, 2018January 28, 2024 by Mathew Boudreaux

This video will walk you through all of his tips and tricks to sewing some elevated ooh la la rope bowls. There’s more to it than setting your zig zag stitch and buying clothesline, so definitely get ready get set go to bringing high end to this ubiquitous project.

For the tutorial, I used a variegated contrast thread so you could see the stitching. I prefer the look of matching thread, but the contrast definitely can create some extra jush to this project.

For the tutorial, I tested out both Terial Magic and Aleene’s Fabric Stiffening Spray and between the two I honestly couldn’t pick a favorite. Terial Magic has a slight edge because it smells sooooo good, but both provided the level of stability that I was looking for.

The specific craft cord that I used is called Cora’s Craft Cord. I’ve used both 4 mm and 6mm. Whether you pick this particular cord, getting a cotton cord is critical to stiffen it.

I’ve watched several bowl making tutorials today and I find yours to be the best. Like you, I would prefer an actual bowl over a saucer-like “bowl”. I also love the idea of NOT wrapping miles of cord, just intermittent sections to add some bling. Thanks so much for the tutorial!

Most tutorials that I’ve seen recommend shaping the bowl as you go but I’ve found that simply tightening the cord that you’re feeding into the machine can have the same effect. I’ve used that technique to do what you describe.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I watched your video today and immediately got in the car and headed to Craft Warehouse to get the cord to make some of these. Soooo great! Thanks for such an informative video. I just painted my bathroom in blues so I got 2 skeins and am heading to my sewing machine to get started right now. Will look for more posts to keep me inspired.

how do you reduce the tops of clothes line baskets. I can get the sides and bottom, but would like to shape the bowl with a smaller diameter at the top. Thanks…Lolly

Love your baskets! I seem to have the concept down but wrapping my rope with fabric doesn’t look right. What am I possibly doing wrong?
