Hold Tight Quilt

Hold Tight Quilt

Posted on October 8, 2019January 8, 2024 by Mathew Boudreaux

It seems like aeons ago since I started this quilt, which in Mister Domestic time is 8 months ago. The incomparable Sharon Holland was launching her Hold Tight Quilt Pattern and doing a sew-along, so of course I had to join.

I had never played with transparency in color before, so I was jazzed to work my color magic on this one. Since rainbow is one of my favorite colors, I had to go that route. My absolute favorite color is the Tile Blue AGF Solid. I had to use that in the background and methought it would really pop. So with the Pure Solids as my color choices, I tinkered with the color flow in Illustrator until I got it just right.

Once all the colors were picked, I got to stitching a couple curves at a time.

I even filmed a tutorial on how to sew curves in quilting. If you haven’t watched it yet, make sure to check it out.

Once I had it all stitched up, I pinned it to my fence to evaluate and take a photo.

I absolutely loved it, like super loved it, but I wanted it to be bigger so Helena and I could both snuggle under it. So I added a row of Tile Blue squares on the bottom and top and extended the left side to complete the balloon. Once that was complete, I sent it off to Melissa of Six Kids Quilts for her to work her magic. And work her magic did she.

I continued the Tile Blue Background in the binding and for the first time, sewed on my dining room table. Legit this is beyond amazing and freeing and I need to do more of this.

And without further ago, here is my finished Hold Tight Quilt full frontal in sexy light.

It’s gorgeous!! The final quilting adds so much dimension and depth the the already perfect color layering. I love that you did not use a contrasting binding – it’s perfect!

This is one of my favorite versions I’ve seen. Great color choices, starting with your “sky”. I may have to make one of these after all.
