Brimfield Block Pillow

Brimfield Block Pillow

Posted on October 5, 2017February 21, 2021 by Mathew Boudreaux

In mid September, Kim Martucci, one of the cofounders of Brimfield Awakening, reached out to me with the most adorable message to ask if I’d be willing to make a new EPP block that she had coming out in October. Even without seeing the block, I knew I was going to say yes because of the message, but once I saw it and how unique it was I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.

My brain immediately went nautical Americana, like a compass, which immediately took me to Amy Sinibaldi’s Les Petits Fabrics because it gives me a high end similar vibe. I had made an orange peel appliqué pillow earlier in the year and knew this would be the perfect partner for it. And it didn’t take long before I had the whole block stitched up.

Once I prepped the block for appliqué, I picked out the Indygo Shadow Solid Smooth Denim for the background and Aurifil 80 wt Muslin thread to machine appliqué.

Once I had it appliquéd on, I knew immediately that I wanted a tight grid on point for the quilting only on the background fabric so that the appliqué panel would pop. I’m also planning this approach for a larger scale project so this was my opportunity to see if the extra work of hiding the knots is worth it.

Even though I knew I wouldn’t see the back since I was turning it into a pillow, I picked Aurifil Ermine 50 wt for the bobbin since I looooooove the way it looks on denim. Here’s a look of the entire back once I finished the quilting.

For the topstitch, I used Blue Grey 40 wt, another staple thread in the Mister Domestic’s Tool Box. Boy oh boy do I love the magic of this color on Fabric.

I went with a simple envelop back for the pillow because I wanted this to be all about the centerpiece. And tadaaaa here’s my Brimfield Block Pillow.

Now if you want to snag this Brimfield Block, presales will begin the afternoon of Friday October 6th at Brimfield Awakening.

We love love love this! And we especially appreciate that you used the perforation in all the “house” paper pieces, separating the triangle tips into additional pieces!! Thank you Matthew for this awesome nautical take on the Brimfield Block. We want to bring it with us to Maine 🙂

You do SUCH amazing work! I love this ~ especially the denim. That’s saying a lot because denim is not usually my first choice. Or second 🙂

Did you remove the papers before applying the EPP to the background fabric?
And do you have any tips on how to handle the sticky out bits/tags for machine applique?
    Many thanks. xx

Oh ya totally remove the papers first and I just trim off the tags and such before machine Appliqué.
