Eflorescent Celeste Knit Dress by Ashley Tu’avao

Eflorescent Celeste Knit Dress by Ashley Tu’avao

Posted on June 3, 2018March 14, 2020 by Mathew Boudreaux

I am so honored that Ashley Tu’avao made this dress for Helena for my Spring Quilt Market booth. The fit and style are perfection for Helena and wooooow is the workmanship phenomenal. Aaaand I learned some new things are a sewist from her making this. So basically this was a win-win-win.

Like let’s talk about this Eloflex thread for a minute. I’d never heard of this and stretchable thread frankly scared me but now I must have this and try it. Check out this hem!!

So now let’s get to know Ashley a little bit more. She’s basically amazing awesome sauce, but here are her own words.

My name is Ashley Tu’avao.  I first learned to sew at the feet of my grammy and mom!  They taught me a love of learning new things and making things with your own two hands.  They both have made me many handmade things and I have realized that every time I see, wear, or touch these pieces, I remember how much they love me.  I have had so much joy in my life from sewing and creating things that I want to pass that joy onto others and so my small business, Lucky Lemon, emerged.  My truest love is quilting, but I have recently started sewing clothing for myself and others.  When I heard that Loved to Pieces was going to include knits, I knew that I had to get my hands on some.  There is nothing more fun to wear in summer than a comfy knit dress, especially ones that twirls!

The pattern I used is based on the Patterns for Pirates “Me Hearties” dress which can be found here:

Me Hearties Dress – Patterns for Pirates

I lengthened the bodice and the circle skirt slightly to make sure the dress was a little below Helena’s knees.  I used my Brother 1034D serger for all inside seams and my Brother SE-400 for the hems using a walking foot and a ball point needle.  For this project I discovered a new wonderful thread by Coats and Clark called Eloflex.  It is a nylon tread that has been working wonders for me lately!  The Eloflex color G75520 is a light aqua and matches Mathew’s Efflorescent Celeste print perfectly.

And here’s the dress being all cute in my booth at Spring Market 2018.

And here’s Helena werking it with her new stuffie named Chik-Chik.

Thank you Ashley for your generosity in spirit and immense talent. This dress is definitely going to be a heavy-rotation outfit as long as Helena’s able to wear it. You rock!
