Mr. Peacock – English Paper Piecing

Posted on March 3, 2017February 25, 2024 by Mathew Boudreaux

So this fella was supposed to find a permanent home on my couch, but one day I was FaceTiming with my BFF and, upon showing her my WIPs on my design wall, she totally claimed him for her own.  And I’m not gonna lie and say I wasn’t a little salty because he’s real cute. But it makes me happy to know that there are pieces of me in Jen’s house since she lives in Austin and that warm fuzzy happy happy feeling totally wins. So au revoir, Mr. Peacock. You will forever be documented on the interweb on this page.

So this project started like 80 years ago it feels when Violet Craft asked me to test one of her new English paper piecing kits for Fall Market 2016 and I chose the Peacock. They’re not out yet, but should be gradually rolling out and I’ll totally update it here when it happens. But anyhoo, here are a few progress photos of the beginning to show you that it’s actually EPP.

And that about as far as I got before Fall Market, so folks were able to see Mr. Peacock’s head in all its glory when they visited Violet’s booth.  Once he flew back home, I was able to put Humpty Dumpty back together again and ooooooh looooook.

Now my brain had all these crazy quilting ideas, but I remembered how bomb Mr. Turkey was with straight line quilting, so I went that route here using 80wt Aurifil. Serisously I will never tire of Felicia’s laser beam.

And since my BFF also got my turquoise improv flower pillow, I trimmed this one to the same size and used the same back and binding and boom here it is.

So if English Paper Piecing is something you want to get into, but don’t know where to start, I did a demo at the Art Gallery Fabrics booth at Quiltcon 2017 and you can find the video here.

Love, love, love the peacock. I will be looking for the pattern and or kit release. By the way, I am a glue stick fanatic and I use the cheap stuff…Elmer’s washable glue sticks. They are the bomb and I use them about 99 per cent of the time replacing straight pins for the most part. Doing EPP without a glue stick is just unimaginable. By the way, I so enjoyed meeting you at Quiltcon and really enjoyed your enthusiasm not only about quilting, but life!

It’s lovely. Is that really 80 wt thread? Your stitches are much more visible than I would expect from such a fine thread.
