Quilting 101: Whole Cloth Quilt (with video tutorial)

Posted on March 16, 2019January 22, 2024 by Mathew Boudreaux

In preparation for National Quilting Day, I decided to create a couple beginner-friendly quilting tutorials that could help bring more future quilters into the fold. The first tutorial is on the Brother Stitching Sewcial Site and is a smaller quilted pillow with an envelop pillow.

And while the pillow tutorial is definitely a complete soup-to-nuts tutorial for future quilters, I felt that there still needed to be a quilt-sized tutorial to show the subtle differences quilting at that scale.

I had two yards each of these awesome Reminder Hidden and Reminder Bold prints from the Pastel Thrift Collection with Art Gallery Fabrics that I thought would be perfect for this project. I wanted a 40″ x 60″ finished quilt, so I trimmed the length to size and filmed the YouTube tutorial.

Here are some supplies that I recommend for your first quilting project.

I always save my excess binding from projects and I had these three different prints that I joined together for a pop of colors in the sea of black and white letters. I hope these resources help the future quilters of the world. Feel free to leave any questions or extra tips in the comments. And Happy National Quilting Day.

While I don’t promote anything unless I legit love it, this post contains affiliate links.

Gasp! Why have I never thought of that?! I hate the thought of tossing out excess binding after each quilt and so have always saved the pieces to use to run under the needle after oiling my machine or when I’m testing a stitch. But they do accumulate. Two lessons I’ve learned here: add color and interest with leftover binding strips, and never assume that just because Mathew says “beginners” that you can’t learn something super! Oh, and I’ve never made a whole cloth quilt before, so maybe I got three lessons out of one!
