Woven Optical Illusion Ombre Pillow (w/ mini tutorial)

Posted on May 26, 2016December 13, 2023 by Mathew Boudreaux

This woven optical illusion ombre pillow seems to be a big hit each time I make one, so I thought it’d be cool to do a mini tutorial on it so y’all can make one of your very own.

The first step is picking your fabric. It usually takes me a yard an a half of fabric for me to make one. I’ve been using V and Co ombre, but there are sooooo many ombrés on the market now so pick whatever floats your boat. You could even use solids and go from light to dark in one color.

Depending on the fabric you choose, it’s important to cut the fabric so that the same color saturation is in the length of each strip.  I like to use 1/2″ strips when making this pillow, so I cut the fabric in 1″ increments and then use my trusty bias tape maker to make the strips, and lay them on a diagonal.

Then once this direction is done, get your trusty WEFTY needle and start weaving the same gradation on the opposite diagonal. Keep going until you hit pay dirt.

If y’all have any questions, I’m in the process of writing a more in depth pattern that will be on craftsy! I hope to see some of these yummy pillows on the interweb, but if you’re all like, um negative, I’d rather buy it, I’m totally selling these in my etsy shop.

Thanks for sharing the tutorial. You make great projects. I just got my WEFTY needles and I’m anxious to start weaving. Housework and other sewing things get in the way. But soon I’ll be giving it a try. I’ve been following your great work on Instagram.

Just curious, is this a 16×16 pillow and so you would pin it basically to that size to work. Thanks

Howdy! It’s actually 18×18. But yes just pin to like half an inch beyond the size that you want

I read somewhere that you use interfacing. Can you explain where and how in the process? Thanks..can’t wait to try this!
